About THIS Calendar
from Dwarf Designs Online

This 6-year project is the culmination of a lifetime interest in media, history, art, and love of research.

Although copyright in a compilation of information such as this extends only to the material contributed by the author of such work and does not imply any exclusive right to the preexisting material, I have written each report after researching through historical texts, legal documents, diaries, and newspaper articles; edited images for illustration; and developed the project for digital display for exclusive use on my personal website.

This digital calendar is based on the Gregorian calendar, and although most topics chosen to include are specifically related to North American culture (specifically the United States), it also encompasses a great deal of information related to western European people and events.

Each month begins with an exploration into how the month originated, and how it has been observed. Developed by date rather than day, each page of this timeless compilation includes tidbit information on something of specific significance that occurred on that date, including a general list of other items, highlighted by images and quotations related to the topic. The calendar also includes a historical view of all US Federal holidays and observances.

The overall project has at times been very interesting, at times very difficult, but it has been an exhilarating adventure. Remembering the significant achievements of remarkable individuals, exploring from the depths of pi to the complexity of the drinking straw, I have learned a great deal from it.

As I completed each day, developing the project through months and seasons, I did come to realize that each day is indeed different. Some days are heart-warming and happy, some days are not. Some days are definitely more interesting than others, but every day is important in some way. The information arising as the project grew reminded me of things no person should ever forget.

It helped me understand the significance of things that happened during my own lifetime (that are often taken for granted), and brought me a greater appreciation for the influence of things that happened in the distant past. This project brought me closer to people who lived hundreds of lifetimes before mine, and made me realize whether we are powerful world leaders, or every day people in every day towns, we all leave a part of ourselves behind through our beliefs, our traditions, and our culture.

But what impressed me the most as the work unfolded was the grandeur found in the innovative imagination of human nature, and I became inspired that despite age, gender, ability, ethnicity, or economic status, people can accomplish great things, even sometimes by chance.

Dwarf Designs Digital Days is being first published on the Internet for 1 January 2010, and includes all date-specific events related to this year. It is my intention to begin not only adding new information, but updating date-specific observances for the years ahead.
