Although a genius in Roman mythology refers to the instance of divine power within all earthly things, it was a prominent belief each individual person had their own genius, guardian spirit meant to guide and protect them throughout the many stages of life. Named to honor the patron goddess of Rome, the genius of women was called a juno. Known by many names (such as Virginalis, Matronalis, and Pronuba) as a woman aged from childhood to courtship, to marriage and birth, the guardian spirit helped in creating a secure home environment.

The name of Junius was given to the month of June to honor Juno, and because of her influence over the genius of women, it came to belief that June is the best month to marry. A logical custom to continue through the centuries, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere, when June was not only at the end of the spring planting season, but also the month of the revered summer solstice.

Other customs of June weddings have been attached across the years. It is thought that marriages were once brought about by the groom kidnapping the bride of his choice, who held onto her with his left hand while the right hand fought off any adversaries who got past the friend he took with him to watch his back. In today's wedding ceremonies, the groom, accompanied by his Best Man, stands to the right of the bride. After marriage to the abductee, the groom would then take his bride into hiding to avoid any interference from her family and/or other suitors, commonly known as a honeymoon today.

From the earliest of ancient times, when marriages were prearranged, it resulted in a system of bartering when a father would exchange his daughter for land or political alliances. A bride price was paid by the prospective groom to the bride's father, who in turn provided a dowry of money or land to accompany his daughter into her new life. The amount of the price and of the dowry often determined who was allowed to marry and who was not.

The wedding industry in today's United States exceeds $120 billion a year. Although bride prices and dowries no longer exist in this country, according to common wedding etiquette, the bride's family is responsible for almost all the expenses. The groom pays for the license, the preacher, the limousine, and the honeymoon.

Amidst all this, the appearance of Father's Day on the third Sunday in June began in 1910 as its founder, inspired by the Mother's Day concept, encouraged the celebration of the male role in marriage and family.
